Rittenhouse shot Silver Lake resident Anthony Huber, 26, once in the chest after the latter struck him with his skateboard. Rittenhouse shot the 26-year-old West Allis resident Gaige Grosskreutz in the right arm, but he survived.
Before the violence in Kenosha, he had taken part in regional police cadet programs and posted on social media his support for the Blue Lives Matter movement and law enforcement.
Rittenhouse was too young to buy a gun, so one of his friends, Dominick Black, bought him an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle in Wisconsin three months before the shooting.
Arrest, Trial and Release
Kyle Rittenhouse was detained following the event and charged with two counts of homicide, one count of attempted homicide, two counts of reckless endangerment, one count of illegal possession of a firearm, and one count of curfew violation. His attorney claimed self-defense at his trial in Kenosha County Circuit Court from November 1 to 19, 2021.
A unanimous jury found Rittenhouse not guilty of the other charges, and Judge Bruce Schroeder dismissed the accusation of unlawful possession.
Rittenhouse’s acquittal was warmly applauded by right-wing politicians and figures who claimed that the shootings were carried out in self-defense. President Joe Biden appealed for the jury’s decision to be respected.
On November 20, he was freed from custody after posting $2 million in bond.
